1 Peter 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
We often hear of various generations being classified by certain names that identify when they were born and their cultural experiences. From the Lost Generation … to the Baby Boomers … Millennials … Gen X … Gen Y … Gen Z … and the latest group classification called Gen Alpha. Each generation has experienced different things as time and history has moved onward affecting their views and values but one thing remains constant to all of them: the Truth of God’s Word fits every generation. The generation’s different cultural experiences did not alter God’s Word because it is enduring to all generations and endures forever (Psalm 100:5; Psalm 117:2). Generations change, cultures change, laws change, and people’s views change, but the Word of God does not change or become outdated. It will not wither, fade, or fall away but will endure forever (1 Peter 1:24, 25).
Some allow the idea of their culture being different from previous generations to develop into an attitude or view that the Church, the Word, and Christianity itself must be different for them too. They have a disdain for the past, its ways, and its norms. They say, “That’s old school,” or “That’s old fashioned,” but God’s Word, Truth, and ways don’t need to change to accommodate any generation.
Our methods, our marketing, and our tools may change in reaching and influencing the different generations but the Truth of God’s Word never changes or is to adapt down. The Prophet Jeremiah said it clearly when he said, “Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, we will not walk therein Jeremiah 6:16.” The old paths are the timeless and unchanging truths of God’s Word. The Truth is enduring and if a generation refuses to walk therein God will wait for a new generation to return to His Truth.
We do not adapt down the Truth to a decaying culture. The Truth isn’t old school or old fashioned it is forever settled in Heaven. Psalm 119:89 says, “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.”
