Luke 1:31-37 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
The Christmas Season centers on the unique birth of Jesus Christ. It is the story of God becoming a man to be the Savior of the world. We call that in theological terms, “the Incarnation,” which means infleshment or to incarnate. It refers to the conception and live birth of the Son of God becoming the Son of man or a spiritual being becoming a human being, namely, the Word made flesh. Our Lord added humanity to His Deity. Why such a drastic measure? If the cure for man required such a drastic measure then his ailment must have been severe. No cure is more drastic than the Incarnation and then the Cross because man’s sin problem was severe and fatal. Man’s salvation required such a severe measure. Since the time of Adam before his fall into sin there had never been a human being on Earth with RIGHTEOUSNESS, ETERNAL LIFE, and DOMINION. All three of these were given to man but when Adam sinned all three were lost. The problem is that every man born here would have the fallen nature and spiritual death passed down from Adam from natural birth Romans 5:12. Since all was lost on Earth by a man the only remedy to get it back would have to be a man:
1. Who was sinless and could therefore pay the penalty for man’s sin and guilt as his substitute to regain RIGHTEOUSNESS?
2. Who could be made alive spiritually with ETERNAL LIFE after becoming man’s sin and dying spiritually?
3. Who would be powerful enough to dethrone satan as man’s master and free us from his dominion and restore the DOMINION that was lost?
The only remedy is to bypass the seed of the man and thus the need of the unique supernatural conception, incarnation, and birth of Jesus Christ. Sounds impossible and it is with men but not with God for with God all things are possible (Mk. 10:27). Through Jesus’ conception, birth, and work of redemption on the Cross, God conquered impossible.
Do you realize that when our Lord added humanity to His Deity He did so for all eternity? He is the God-Man and will one day very soon return as the God-Man to reign on Earth. In between the time of His 1st appearance and His 2nd appearance He carries on a ministry as Mediator 1 Timothy 2:5, 6; Advocate 1 John 2:1; Lord Acts 2:36; Merciful and Faithful High Priest Hebrews 2:17, 18; 4:14-16. The crib in the stall was the 1st step to the Cross. The wood of the crib and the Cross are the same, both carried a body. He came into the world in swaddling cloth and went out wrapped in grave clothes. What He became in the Christmas manger centuries ago is what He shall be forever. His Incarnation is eternal.
