THE EYES OF THE LORD CAN STILL SEE

Proverb 5:21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He pondereth all his goings.

Proverb 15:3 For the eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Hebrews 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

There is an erroneous yet popular teaching that says God no longer sees the sins of believers. That sounds good, especially if you are wanting to continue in sin or have a sin you are struggling with. It also may have partial truth in it because our sins of the past were judged at Calvary’s Cross and are under the Blood of Jesus.

Jesus is the propitiation for our sins or that which expiates and satisfies God’s justice and holiness. Propitiation is a New Testament word that goes back to the Old Testament mercy seat which was the lid to the rectangular box like structure called the ark of the covenant. The blood of the sacrificial substitute would be poured out upon the top of the box, the mercy seat, and God would see the blood and not the broken laws, their sins, or rebellion. This concept is being twisted today to say that since all our sins are covered by the Blood of Jesus, God no longer sees our sins. Since they are forgiven we do not need to repent or confess our sins. True Jesus’ sacrifice once and for all paid the penalty for our sin (all our sin) but that does not mean our sins are automatically forgiven and that God no longer sees our sin.

This false concept completely misunderstands salvation and confuses the difference between the two Biblical doctrines of justification and sanctification. Charles Spurgeon once said that real discernment was not in knowing the difference between right and wrong but in recognizing the difference between right and almost right. In justification God SAVED us from the PENALTY of sin but in sanctification God IS SAVING us from the POWER of sin. God took us out of sin in justification and God takes sin out of us in sanctification. We can add a third doctrine, glorification, where God WILL SAVE us from the PRESENCE of sin. The book of Romans covers all three (Justification – Romans 1-5; Sanctification – Romans 6-8; and Glorification – Romans 8:11). God sees in our walk and life when we are sinning and not being sanctified. That is the reason for His chastening, reproof, and calls for repentance.
