Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Our hope and expectations are to be ONLY in God. God will meet all of our needs Philippians 4:19. Certainly it is right to have expectations of people when we have agreements, covenants, a person’s word, or agreed upon responsibilities. We expect them to do what they said. The problem is people do not always do what they said but God will always do what He said Numbers 23:19.
Expectations stem from needs or come from needs. A need is an active desire for something that is lacking in our lives. It is an empty place within our heart or lives where something is missing. Out of our needs come expectations. We expect or look for our needs to be met. When something is lacking or missing in our life, we believe someone or something should meet it.
We look to things to meet our needs
We look to others to meet our needs.
We look to ourselves to meet our own needs.
In short we turn our needs into expectations.
We have expectations from things.
We have expectations from others.
We have expectations from ourselves.
If our expectations are not met as we hoped we can feel disappointed, unloved, unwanted, unworthy, hurt and even offended. This can lead to sadness, fear, anger, resentment, and despair. From the roots of these negative attitudes can come faulty judgments, vows, and improper behaviors. We make faulty promises inside to ourselves. We vow to meet the need another way, or vow to never let anyone let us down again.
We will always be disappointed if we turn to others or ourselves to meet needs only God can fulfill. The meeting of our deepest needs is in Christ. Many have judged others for failing to satisfy their deepest needs but it was not possible. We were looking in the wrong direction, hoping in the wrong direction, expecting in the wrong direction. Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait (hope/trust) thou ONLY upon God; for my EXPECTATION is from him.
