LAW BEFORE THE LAW?

Law Before The Law

The Bible declares that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. It also reveals that He gives every good and perfect gift and there is no variableness or shadow of turning. He gave us the Law in the Old Testament through Moses and He gave us grace in the New Testament through Jesus Christ. Being under grace does not mean there are no laws, we are anti-law, or that we are lawless.

God has always used laws and always will to reveal His will, regulate life, and rule (administer) in the affairs of the world. God’s laws are always for our good. They do not take away good but rather they take away and keep us from evil. Like the laws in the Garden, “… freely eat … do not eat…,” God had Adam and Eve’s best interest in mind. The heart of God is His laws and that is why even though the Christian is not under the Law of Moses, it is not described disparagingly in the N.T. but is described as being spiritual, holy, just, and good (Romans 7:12, 14).

There was nothing wrong with the Law’s standard but the problem was the weakness of man’s flesh to meet the standard. The Law couldn’t supply the power to meet its demand because of something lacking in man in his fallen state. That doesn’t make the Law useless for the Word of God encourages the use of all Scripture for learning and warning and even to use the law of Moses properly (1 Timothy 1:18). Sin in the New Testament is also defined as the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4). God’s laws set us free but freedom does not mean against the law (anti-law) or lawless.

There is evidence that there is what some call the Eternal Moral Law of God that existed before the Law given to Moses. The first five books of the Bible are often called the Law but the actual code of the Law God gave Moses starts in Exodus 20 and includes Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy that has 610 commands, rules, or do’s and don’ts. Before that there is evidence of some form of law that was in existence as well as after the law God gave Moses. Laying aside the law God (the Author) gave Moses, there is some form of a law:

A. In the Garden – Genesis 2:16, 17
B. After the Fall – Genesis 4:4; Hebrews 11:4
C. At the Boarding of the Ark – Genesis 6:19; 7:2
D. After the Flood – Genesis 9:5, 6
E. At the time of Abraham – Genesis 14:20; Gen. 26:5
F. At the Circumcision – Genesis 17:10-14
G. At the Time of the Exodus – Exodus 16:4; 16:28
H. In the Millennial Kingdom – Zechariah 14:16-21; Isaiah 2:2-4; Micah 4:1-3

Where did those laws come from except from God, based on His character and nature? There is morality (what God considers right/wrong and good/evil) in those laws. So morality didn’t start in the Law God gave Moses, it started with God and from His character.

I love the way you describe the truth of the Bible. God’s law has always been in force. Otherwise there would have been no war in heaven and Satan would not have been cast out. The law of the 10 commandments represents God’s Character.
