REDEMPTION RESTORED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS

redemption restored righteousness and holiness

Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

God created Adam and Eve in His own image and likeness (Gen. 1:26, 27). God’s nature, state of being, or the very essence of His being is righteous and holy. This was a part of man’s spiritual nature: righteous (morally blameless/measuring up to God’s standard of moral perfection) and holy (sinless; pure; set apart for God). This was lost when sin and spiritual death entered their spiritual being in the Fall in the Garden. For man to be redeemed and restored would require righteousness and holiness to be restored. God’s goal in redemption was to restore both righteousness and holiness within man’s nature. God’s plan was the Great Exchange as described in 2 Corinthians 5:21 which says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Our sin would be imputed (set to His account) to Jesus and His righteousness would be imputed (set to our account) to us.

Righteous and holy is what we become as new creations in Christ as Ephesians 4:24 declares, “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. This righteousness and holiness was not possible by man’s own deeds of keeping God’s law. This was the main reason for His grace which accomplished what we could never do on our own. Righteousness and holiness without our deeds of keeping the law but on the basis of Jesus’ deeds of keeping the law.

God’s goal is still holiness in our walk with Him (Ephesians 1:4) which is now made possible by God’s empowering grace. Some portray grace as: a change in God’s standard; that there is no standard; or that the high, holy, moral standards of God have been adapted down. This is a perversion of grace and not the true grace of God (1 Peter 5:12; Jude 4). None of these are Biblical responses or options that God intended us to take. Part of the reason why some faint at God’s high holy standards is because they do not connect grace and mercy along with holiness. As grace does not change the standard but helps us to meet the standard so mercy helps us when we fail to measure up to it. His mercy allows us to keep reaching for His high holy standard. God’s throne of grace is where we can find grace to help but also where we can obtain mercy Hebrews 4:16. His mercy endures forever.
