Hebrews 12:1-3 says, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
There is a race set before every Christian. It is the prescribed course for our life or path of God’s purpose for our life. It is the assignment, will of God, and work we are gifted by Him to do with the time He has given us on Earth. We did not get put in a race just to start but to finish it. We will face things in this life, in the race set before us that we cannot get out of, run from, or avoid. What we need is endurance. There’s four things in these verses from Hebrews 12:1-3 that help us endure:
- REMEMBER THE WITNESS OF THOSE WHO FINISHED THEIR RACE v.1.
They made it, finished their race, and so can we.
- PUT OFF SINS THAT EASILY ENTANGLE & REMOVE WHAT’S ON YOU THAT’S UNNECESSARY v. 1.
Weights are not sins but things we are free to pick up or put down but they encumber our life; everything that gets in the way to impede our movement forward; unnecessary things that swell to consume our time/talents/resources.
- RUN WITH ENDURANCE, HIS VICTORY IS BEHIND US & HIS EXAMPLE IS BEFORE US v. 1, 2.
Grace for endurance flows from His victory. Endurance (longsuffering/patience) is a part of the DNA of our new creation spirit.
- KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO NOT GOING THROUGH v. 2, 3.
People who give up or quit tend to focus only on what they are GOING THROUGH but people who endure focus on what they are GOING TO Heb. 12:2, 3.
