WHERE DO WE FIND RELIEF FOR PAIN?

WHERE DO WE FIND RELIEF FOR PAIN

It is impossible to live in this earth and avoid things that cause emotional pain.  Jesus said we would be exposed to and experience offenses Luke 17:1, things that ignite our emotions (2 Corinthians 11:29), and things that outrage our senses. He also said He’d give us power over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt us (ultimately) Luke 10:19. These things that cause us to be offended and experience emotional pain are deliberately used by satan as stumbling-blocks to stop us in our destiny. We shouldn’t ignore our pain but pay attention to our pain. Pain isn’t an enemy but it lets us know we have one or that something needs attention.

A true Christian knows how to process the hurt and pain in a Biblical way. The Bible is full of stories of people who did not process it properly (brother of the prodigal Luke 15:25-29, Cain Genesis 4:1-12, Barnabas Acts 13:2; 15:36-40) and those who did (Joseph Genesis 39-50, Hannah 1 Samuel 1 & 2, Jabez 1 Chronicles 4:9, 10) and from their experience as well as my own I have found some things which do work and where we can find relief:

  1. WORD OF GOD Romans 15:4

Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Comfort means to console or ease the pain of something. Great peace is in the Word Psalm 119:89. Joy is in the Word Jeremiah 15:16. Comfort is in the Word Romans 15:4.

  1. ANOINTING OF THE SPIRIT Isaiah 61:1-3; Luke 4:18.

Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

The anointing can soothe our pain and irritation. The anointing is for removing burdens and destroying yokes of bondage (Isaiah 10:27).

  1. COMFORT OF THE HOLY GHOST John 14:16-18; 15:26; 16:7-13; Romans 8:26.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Consoler, and will lead us to the truth that sets us free.

  1. PRAYER Psalm 55:16-18; Luke 18:1.

Psalm 55:16 As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. 17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice. 18 He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.

Deliverance for our soul (mind, will, emotions) can come through prayer. Pour out your heart Psalm 62:5-8 like Hannah did in 1 Samuel 1.

  1. FORGIVENESS Ephesians 4:31, 32.

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

A lot of pain remains due to holding to an offense. Sometimes we just have to release others who offended us instead of avenging ourselves and in the release we find relief.

  1. OUR SPIRIT Proverbs 18:14.

Proverb 18:14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

There is resurrection life and power in our spirit that can sustain us through emotional pain. We need to keep our spirit strong by feeding it God’s Word. A strong spirit will help us endure suffering 1 Peter 5:10 and help us walk in love Jude 20, 21.

  1. PRESENCE OF GOD Psalm 16:11; Exodus 33:14.

Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Entering God’s presence through worship, praise, and prayer can bring us back into joy. Rest is in His presence (Exodus 33:14).

There is life and power in all of these and that is what it takes to bring relief to our soul where our emotions reside. We cannot allow our emotions to keep us in a state of hurt because emotions are designed to take us somewhere. They can take us toward the will of God or away from the will of God. Our emotions are to be the followers of our decisions and behavior not the leaders. We don’t feel our way into obeying; we obey our way into feeling. Our emotions won’t always feel like they support what we should do. We need to keep commitments because we’ve decided it is right not feel it is right.
