John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he shall abide with you forever. 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

The Holy Ghost is our Helper, Counselor, and Comforter. The word for Comforter is broader in meaning than just comfort. It is the word “parakletos” which means one who helps by consoling, encouraging, or advocating on behalf of. To comfort and console means to give solace to or to ease the pain of. That is what Jesus would do if He were here in Person with us like He was with the disciples before He left.  As Jesus is now our advocate in Heaven in relation to the Father, the Holy Spirit is now our advocate on Earth in relation to Father while we live in the world. Here on Earth, living in the world but not being of the world, is where we need Heaven’s help, consoling, encouragement, and solace to ease our pain.

When Jesus gave this promise of praying to the Father and giving us another comforter He was about to leave them. The context of Jesus talking about the Comforter in various places in John 14 – 16 is some last minute instructions before He would be arrested and no longer be with them. They would see Him briefly after His Resurrection but then He would ascend to the Father. The fact that Jesus would go to the Father would mean that they would be left alone unless He sent another one to fill in for him or to replace His presence with them. Notice the word “another” in John 14:16, “…and I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter.”  That word “another” is not the Greek word heteros, which would be an opposite, or “another of a different kind.”  But this Greek word is the word “allos,” which means “another of the same kind.”  For example if you had an apple and I took that apple away but gave you an orange in its place I would have given you another piece of fruit but another of a different kind. If I gave you another apple it would be another of the same kind.

Just like you could have come to Jesus when He was physically here to receive help, consoling, comfort or encouragement, another of the same kind is living on the inside of you.  Not another of a different kind.   Jesus sent another of the same kind to be a comfort to us to live on the inside of us.  Though he would no longer be physically present with them, He would be spiritually present, through the Holy Spirit. Everything Jesus was to the disciples in His personal presence when He was here, there is another of the same kind of Holy Spirit living in us. He will furnish the same help, comfort, and encouragement.
