Jesus told us that while living in this fallen world we would face tribulations, trouble, and trials. John 16:33 says, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” We are not in the Garden of Eden where God created everything to be good and very good nor are we are in Heaven where there is no evil. In spite of the realities of living in a sin cursed world we can be of good cheer or have a steady display of a bright and optimistic spirit about us. Why? Because He has overcome the world and His victory is the basis of our joy.
Joy is never something we have to generate, pump up, work up, create, or pretend. It comes as we put our faith in His finished work of redemption where His victory becomes ours.
He defeated sin. Where? In the world.
He defeated sickness. Where? In the world.
He defeated satan. Where? In the world.
He defeated the curse. Where? In the world.
He defeated every physical circumstance. Where? In the world.
He defeated every wile and fiery dart of the devil. Where? In the world.
He defeated every weapon formed against Him. Where? In the world.
He defeated the wisdom of men. Where? In the world.
He actually gave the devil home field advantage and still whipped him through the cross and took from him the keys of hell and of death (Rev. 1:17,18).
He said, “I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD” not I will, I’m going to, or I’m in the process of. He paid and purchased everything we need to overcome the world when He paid redemption’s price. That is why one of the greatest threats to us having victory in this life and joy is a lack of knowledge of redemption. He said it is my victory now add your faith to it. 1 John 5:4 says, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” We are believers and overcomers based on our birth. We are born again into His victory and need only put our faith into what we’ve been born into.
