We are living in our world in the cultural period defined by some as postmodernism whose main characteristics are the death of truth, no absolutes, and relativism. Jesus said God’s Word is truth (John 17:17) and we need the truth more and more in our lives, in our preaching and teaching, in our Churches and ministries in these perilous times.
Our Lord Jesus defeated satan and stripped him of his jurisdiction, authority, and right to rule over the child of God (Colossians 1:12; 2:15; Luke 10:19; Hebrews 2:14, 15). Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6) and the Truth is in Jesus (Ephesians 4:21). Truth is foremost in dealing with the devil. Truth is light and any untruth is darkness. He is the prince of darkness/father of lies or untruth. All our armor of light is held up with the girdle or belt of truth. Truth is our protection.
Deception can only work against us in the areas where the light of God’s truth, the Word of God (Psalm 119:105, 130), has not been embraced, renewed our mind, and penetrated our thinking. It is no coincidence that the Believers our enemy seduces, deceives, and has success over in departing from the faith is who he influences to turn away their ears from the truth, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And THEY SHALL TURN AWAY THEIR EARS FROM THE TRUTH, and shall be turned unto fables 2 Timothy 4:2-4.”
It is also said of that one who will come forth known as the person of the antichrist identified by Daniel the Prophet as the little horn in his vision (Daniel 8:9), that he will do three things, “And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and IT CAST DOWN THE TRUTH TO THE GROUND, it PRACTISED, and PROSPERED Daniel 8:12.” These three things are also what the antichrist spirit which is already at work in the world (1 John 4:3) is doing and will do:
- Cast down the truth to the ground (cast – to throw out, down, or away; hurl or fling away).
- Practised (to do, make, or practice (sin); accomplish; advance it; bring it forth; furnish it).
- Prospered (cause sin to) push forward; break out; come mightily; be profitable).
As his lies cause the truth to be cast to the ground, sin will be practiced, advance, and be pushed forward. The good news is that we are the ones in possession of absolute truth, we serve an infallible Leader who is the Truth, and we have the Spirit of truth to lead, teach, strengthen, and guide us. Our enemy can’t handle the truth and remember what 1 John 4:4 in the context of dealing with the spirit of antichrist, the spirit of error (deceit, fraud, delusion), “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
