Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Suppose you were in a running race and one of these things happened:
- The starter’s gun fired, you slipped at the start, and then you look back to see why you slipped.
- The runner next to you made a false start before the starters gun, you stopped to go back to argue with the starter.
- A runner bumped into you, causing you to stumble but not fall.
In all three instances what would happen if you look back? You lose the opportunity to win. The same holds true for the race God has set before us, we have to forget what is behind and go forward. The Apostle Paul said he was forgetting what was behind and reaching for what was before him. He didn’t say he reached the spiritual goal or gained all that God had for him but that he was still reaching for more. He reduces all that is required to successfully go forward into a simple game plan. Not 5, 10, 15, or 20 things but this “one thing I do. Forget what is behind and press forward. It sounds like two things but it is just one. The word for forget means to loose out of mind and by implication to neglect.
Forgetting isn’t something we do it is something we neglect. Neglect implies inaction or what we do nothing about. Don’t feed it, nurture it, and rehearse it but neglect it. Don’t do anything with it, don’t try to figure it out, don’t try to find fault to assess blame, don’t analyze it but neglect it and its power will die. Part of the victory over the past is in simply pressing forward. Press forward and keep reaching for what God has for you in 2019.
