America has been blessed because many of our Founding Fathers and millions of Americans through the years have patterned their lives after the standard of righteousness found in God’s Word Proverbs 14:34, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”America’s culture and history reflect her Christian heritage. The early colonist’s righteous character, faith in God, and reverence for His Word laid the foundation for the economic system we have today. They held the idea (what later was termed the Protestant work ethic) that work was a gift from God and a means of glorifying Him. Early American education instilled solid work values such as honesty, diligence, and faithfulness. The Puritans work ethic flourished in America and laid the foundation for an economic system based upon the principle of free enterprise.
Free enterprise means that the government leaves individuals free to own businesses and make a living dependent upon their own enterprise or initiative. Free enterprise is the American system by which the means of production or factors of production and distribution are privately owned and operated with limited government. A limited government is government that exercises its power under restrictions usually by means of a constitution.
The Founders believed the American people, possessors of deeply rooted character and values, could prosper if left free to:
Acquire and own property
Have access to free markets
Produce what they wanted
Work for whom and at what they wanted
Travel and live where they would choose
Acquire goods and services which they desired
Such a free market economy was, to them, the natural result of liberty, carried out in the economic dimension of life. Their philosophy tended to enlarge individual freedom, not to restrict or diminish the individual’s right to make choices and to succeed or fail based on those choices. The economic role of their Constitutional government was simply to secure rights and encourage commerce. Through the Constitution, they granted their government some very limited enumerated powers. This is all under siege today by Socialists in our nation while the electorate either ignores or is totally uninformed of Socialism’s failed history.
God certainly has blessed America in many ways and with His abundance. America has been blessed – our land, economic system, generosity, people, and freedom. All of His blessings are not guaranteed if we stray from the God who gave them to us. Thomas Jefferson said, “My God! How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of and which no other people on earth enjoy.” Jefferson also asked, “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed the conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?” America has not prospered by accident. All of our prosperity, freedoms, and greatness as a nation are the fruit of our nation’s faith and trust in God. We have relied on God to be our strength and source of protection. It was the faith of our fathers in God’s Word. We need to return to the foundations and faith that made us great. We need to restore the ancient landmarks which Proverb 22:28 speaks of, “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.”
