As Christians, we are not under the law, but under grace. The New Testament does not suggest we live under Law rather than grace but at the same time the Scriptures do not cause one to speak as though it is evil and useless. Some who emphasize grace today are leaving that impression. Neither does the New Testament suggest we ignore, discard, or view as useless the entire Old Testament Scriptures now that we are “under grace.” No preacher with a true revelation of grace will ever speak disparagingly of the Law or of the Old Testament. If they do, they only reveal their confusion.
It is important to understand that THE LAW IS NOT USELESS TO THE CHRISTIAN AND NOT EVIL. When I speak of the Law I am referring to what God gave to His covenant people and nation Israel (Leviticus 26:46; Romans 9:4; 1 Chronicles 17:21; Psalm 147:19-20), through Moses (John 1:17). Though it served a temporary role in God’s redemptive plan as a schoolmaster or disciplinary supervisor to the particular people He gave it to until Jesus and faith in Jesus would come (Galatians 3:19, 21-25), its validity and usefulness is not temporary. The Law is called holy, just, good and spiritual (Romans 7:12, 14) and things about God’s character can be learned from it (1 Corinthians 10:11; Romans 15:4). We can learn and profit from all Scripture inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). The morality placed in the Law existed before the Law God gave Moses because it came from God’s character. His holy righteous character is the same before, during, and after the Law of Moses. Moral principles from God’s character are even repeated in the New Testament.
The Law also has a permanent role and is still good if it is used lawfully to reveal man’s sinfulness and behaviors contrary to sound doctrine (1 Timothy 1:8-10). Paul said “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law (Romans 3:31).” Many that think grace means they can do as they please and that they can speak disparagingly about the Law, seem to forget that God is the Source of both the Law and grace though each had a different purpose (John 1:17). The Old Testament is still a part of God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) which is profitable for our use. There are over 250 quotations from Old Testament books that are found in the New Testament.
The Old Testament Ark of the Covenant with the Tables of the Law in it showed in type God’s intention that the Law was to be internalized. In the New Testament under grace God has written His law in our hearts (Hebrews 10:6-8). Antinomians, those against law, anti-law, that have a disdain for any moral laws (standards of right/wrong and good/evil), always seem the “cherry pick” the verses that reveal the law couldn’t give life, salvation, righteousness or supply power to meet its demands but they never mention the Scriptures that speak favorably of the Law. Here are some Scriptures that speak favorably about the Law and the Old Testament:
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
1 Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? 10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. 11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
1 Corinthians 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Romans 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Romans 7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
Romans 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
1 Timothy 1:8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; 9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
