Salvation is receiving Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9, 10). This salvation experience made us a part of a spiritual Body called the Body of Christ. This is to lead to becoming a member of a local Body of Christ called the Local Church.
When we speak of membership, it is in line with the Lord’s design for membership in the Body of Christ. Of course, a person must be saved to become a member of the Body of Christ. The Bible also speaks of membership in terms of functional membership, or every member of Christ’s Body functioning in some way by God’s design.
The real organization of the church and Body of Christ is around the truths that:
- JESUS IS THE HEAD Ephesians 1:22, 23; Colossians 1:18
Ephesians 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
- THE CHURCH IS THE BODY 1 Corinthians 12:12, 14, 17; Romans 12:4, 5;
1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ…. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.
- ALL MEMBERS HAVE GIFTS Romans 12:6; 1 Peter 4:10.
Romans 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
- ALL MEMBERS HAVE A PLACE 1 Corinthians 12:18.
1 Corinthians 12:18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
- ALL MEMBERS HAVE A FUNCTION Ephesians 4:16.
Ephesians 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Since all members have gifts and all members have a place, all members have a function. Every member is to be a functional member, and there are no unused members. That means there is something for everyone to do, and no Christian needs to feel left out. Every function of the Body has a member of its Body to perform it. Every member of the Body has a function of its Body to perform it. You are needed, wanted, and gifted to do your part in the Body.
