Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Grace and truth came to us through Jesus Christ (John 1:17). It is God’s exceeding abundant grace that enables us to do what we could not do on our own and get to where we could not get to on our own. It is both enabling and empowering.  Works on our part to reach up to God are worthless before we experience salvation. Our faith can only respond to His finished work. Once we have come to the Cross and received salvation, good works from our life can begin. The Word of His grace (Acts 20:32) needs rightly divided by looking at the Word on salvation and discipleship side by side.  After we receive salvation we are to be followers of Jesus or disciples of Jesus. See these two sides of our great salvation:

What God has DONE – What we are to DO

Faith alone saves – Faith that saves is not alone

Not by works – Unto good works
Position in Christ – Practice before men
Provided by grace – Empowered by grace
God’s love for us – Our love for God
Christ’s work for us – Our work for Christ
Salvation/God’s will for us – Discipleship/Our will for God
Freedom from sin – Freedom to serve
God worked it in us – We work it out
Made righteous – We live and do right
New creation spirit- Walk in the spirit (produce fruit)
Loved completely – Love others completely
Saved by the gift of grace – Live by a growth in grace
Called saints (holy ones) – Carry out holiness (live holy)
Made worthy in Christ – Walk worthy unto the Lord
Some of the imbalance today being presented as grace seems to only present truths that focus on the left side of the list. The left side represents and is the result of the faithful work of Christ for men (Grace); the right side represents the faithful work of men for God (Faith/Our response). Both sides need presented or the gospel of the true grace of God gets distorted.
