FAVOR IN A HARD PLACE

Genesis +In+the+Beginning...Grace+-+Part+9.026

The Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison Genesis 39:21

Christians are favored by virtue of being in Christ Jesus. If we’ve been favored, we’ve received grace; if we’ve received grace, we’ve been favored. In the New Testament, the same word translated grace (charis) some 130 times is translated as favor 6 times so the two are definitely similar. In these 6 references (Luke 1:30; Luke 2:52; Acts 2:47; Acts 7:10, 46; Acts 25:3) it is translated favor because the context shows a manifestation of favor or someone having found favor with someone. In the Old Testament when the context was the same the usage of favor mainly carries the idea of grace in motion or manifestation. The Old Testament commonly stated it as finding favor in the sight of or in the eyes of someone. The one favored is shown kindness, treated with generosity, graciousness, and goodwill, which in some cases is far beyond what would normally be expected.

I like to define favor as God’s gracious kindness, blessing, and influence upon you that:

1. Causes good things to happen for you &
2. Causes people to see something about you to favor and treat you well.

This favor can come in strange places, even the hard places of life. Would you expect to find favor in a prison, especially when you are the prisoner? When Joseph was falsely accused of seducing his boss’s wife, he was sent to prison. While in prison, “The Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison” (Gen. 39:21). Joseph was so highly favored that the head of the prison gave Joseph the authority over all the prisoners, and did not “look over Joseph’s shoulder” to check out his faithfulness (Gen. 39:23). This story reveals an outstanding truth. Joseph was in prison (a confining circumstance) but prison couldn’t stop the favor of God. Your present condition or your surroundings have no bearing on God’s ability to bring a manifestation of His favor into your life.

Ask God to give you favor in the sight of all the people in your interactions, appointments, and contacts in your world today.
