Psalm 5:12 For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
The Lord will bless and favor the righteous, those who have been declared righteous and made righteous by virtue of faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Righteousness is first a state of being and standing before the Lord that also becomes our nature in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 4:24). It produces right conduct and right living or fruits of righteousness (Philippians 1:11). We can do right because we’ve been made right.
Grace and favor are very similar concepts in Scripture. It seems, though, that one aspect of favor that distinguishes it from grace is that its influence upon you causes something about you to be seen or noticed by others. That is why you will often see the phrase, “favor in the eyes of or in the sight of” numerous places in Scripture.
Psalm 90:17 shows us this aspect of favor calling it the beauty of the Lord. “Let the beauty (favor) of our God be upon us, yes, establish the work of our hands Psalm 90:17.” It is the same root word as is used for the name Naomi (Ruth’s mother-in-law and one of the three prominent characters in the book of Ruth) which gives added meaning to favor: beauty, pleasantness, sweetness, and agreeableness. The spa may charge you for a beauty treatment but this one has been paid for by Jesus. I pray God’s favor (beauty, pleasantness, agreeableness and sweetness) be upon you today.
