James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
The arch enemy of God and our enemy, the devil, is a defeated foe who we must continually resist. To resist him is to stand against, oppose, and withstand him at every point of contact with him. When we do, he will flee away and run away until a more opportune time. He continually renews his attacks and yields only what he must or is made to do. The only safe and approved way of meeting him is resistance, not argument, not reasoning, not dialoguing with him. We can use the authority of the Name of Jesus and resist him.
The verse starts out by saying to submit yourselves to God, resist the devil as though it is one act. The act of submitting to God in all things resists the devil or builds resistance to evil from him. Every time we obey, put ourselves in subjection to, set ourselves under the authority of God we are resisting the devil and at the same time building resistance to him.
When we choose to submit to the truths of God’s Word,
When we obey and are doers of the Word,
When we read, study, and meditate on His Word,
When we faithfully assemble with a local Body of Believers,
When we support the work of God with our prayers, finances, and service,
When we fulfill our calling and purpose,
When we function in the grace given us to function,
We are resisting the devil and building resistance to the devil. Every act of submission and obedience to God resists the devil.
