John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
When Jesus came to die on the Cross for the sins of the world, He did it to give us eternal life. Romans 6:22, 23 says, “22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Having eternal life doesn’t start when we get to Heaven but on Earth and it is what allows us to have hope for the life which is to come (1 Timothy 4:8). Jesus also came to give us a kind of life to live on Earth with eternal life within us until we go to Heaven. It is the abundant life and life more abundantly. Abundantly means superabundant; exceeding abundant above; superior in quality; beyond measure; and above the ordinary. Abundant life is a superior life that is above the ordinary. He did not come to preserve a life we already had but impart a life we never knew before. Not a bare existence but an abundant life; not a life naturally possible or earthly in origin but exceedingly above that.
If someone promised to give you money more abundantly, we’d think “lots of money.” If someone promised to give us food more abundantly, we’d think “lots of food.” Jesus promised to give us LIFE more abundantly, so we should think “lots of life.” The abundant life is life as God has in His being and nature, spiritual life. Lots of strength; lots of joy; lots of peace; lots of hope; lots of power; lots of health; lots of grace; lots of victory; lots of dominion; lots of conquest; lots of success; lots of purpose; lots of blessing…. It is not merely abundance in physical things. Don’t settle for the fact of having eternal life; there is life more abundantly. Don’t wait until Heaven to really live. Live the abundant life on Earth.
