Ephesians 5:14 “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”
Romans 13:11 “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
The greatest need in the world today is a revived and awakened church. A truly revived and awakened church is a church that’s alive, full of life, and in a flourishing condition. A church full of life is because its people are full of life. Christians being brought back to life again and becoming full of overflowing life always leads to lost people being saved and being touched by God.
Individual Christians as well as groups of Christians can awake out of carnality and their low level of Christian living. Historically, in past awakenings, God has done a work on the church so He can do a work in the world. These awakenings (often called moves of God, outpourings, spiritual rain, visitations, and times of refreshing from His presence) have in past times come for three basic reasons:
(1) To counteract spiritual decline (the need for reviving always indicates a state of decline exists);
(2) To create spiritual momentum (to the work of God in the earth);
(3) To recover spiritual truth/light/life that has been lost.
If Christians walked in obedience to God and all of the truths of their redemption there would not be a declining condition, a need for revival, or a need to be awakened. The reality is that Christians often lose their passion, zeal, and fervency. As Ephesians 5:14 and Romans 13:11 you could say they fall asleep (whether it is due to sin, carnality, or compromise). While asleep, our walk isn’t what it should be. While asleep, we’re unaware of His time. While asleep, we’re unresponsive to His voice. While asleep spiritually, we do not do normal Christian things like:
Feeding on the Word
Assemble with the local Church Body
Serve with our gifts
Witness to lost people
Give our tithes, offerings, and benevolence.
Selfishness rules instead of selflessness because of carnality. Everything is second to their self-centeredness. Carnal Christians need awakened. People are awakened spiritually out of their carnality when they return to their first love. When the Spirit of God and Word of God revives us (brings us back to life again), there is an awakening. We get an awareness of God that shakes us, grips us, arouses us, alerts us, and stirs us. As the great revivalist Charles Finney said, “We are awakened to a new beginning of obedience to God.” True Christianity consists of obedience to God, and when a person is revived, it brings an awakening to obedience.
This awakening includes being awakened to the condition of our walk with God and if there is sin, the conviction of sin. David, in the Psalms expressed how this acknowledgement of his sin and getting his heart right would lead to impacting others. David said in Psalms 51:7-13, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 THEN WILL I TEACH TRANSGRESSORS THY WAYS; AND SINNERS SHALL BE CONVERTED UNTO THEE.
