Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Colossians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
We are told in Galatians to walk in the spirit and we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). This is not a suggestion or something to try to do but a command we can obey. That means it must be possible and it must be a choice we are able to make. Our walk involves a choice or yielding of our will. One of the keys to empower that choice or act of yielding is stated in Colossians 3:10. Here in Colossians 3:10 the Bible tells us the new man or new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) is renewed with knowledge.
Yieldedness is always based on knowledge. Knowledge increases our will’s power to decide and gives it the leverage it needs. So many try to walk in the spirit without this renewing in knowledge that should continually take place and then they wonder why they aren’t so spiritual. Their knowledge of who they are in Christ is very minimal and yet their expectations are very high. They need renewed in knowledge after the picture or image of who they have been created which is in Christ. Without sufficient knowledge they cannot consistently yield to their new creation nature. Knowledge is the key to yieldedness.
You can clearly see this in Romans 6:13, 16, and 19 where we are told to yield.
Romans 6:13 Neither YIELD ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but YIELD yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye YIELD yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have YIELDED your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now YIELD your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
Notice that before it tells us to yield and prior to those verses the Bible presents three knowledge statements or things to know in v.3, v.6, and v.9.
Romans 6:3 KNOW ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Romans 6:6 KNOWING this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:9 KNOWING that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
We are told to YIELD after we KNOW something; so yielding comes from knowing. The devil works overtime to keep the Believer dumbed down or living at a low level of knowledge of the Word so he can neutralize their influence in the Earth. He then is more successful in getting them to yield to him and his enticements to the lusts of their flesh. Christians who live dominated by their flesh might look like they are enjoying the pleasures of their sin but they are miserable inside. It is time to renew our inward man every day with the knowledge of who we are in Christ. There is nothing like the love, joy, and peace that can come from a walk in the spirit.
