Our identity influences how we think, view, and feel about ourselves. Part of our spiritual warfare is by faith accepting who God’s Word says we are versus what life’s experiences try to tell us we are, or what people have said about us. Identity defines who you really are and it:
– INFLUENCES THE DECISIONS WE MAKE (we make decisions based on the way we see ourselves).
– PRECEDES BEHAVIOR OR HOW WE ACT. (Wrong behavior should make us realize that we are believing lies about our identity or who we are).
– IS CONNECTED TO GOD’S PURPOSE FOR OUR LIFE.
– CAN ONLY COME FROM ONES ORIGIN (Where we came from and Who we came from)
Since origin is a main factor to establishing our identity in both the natural and spiritual then we must know our origin. My grandparents on both sides (Alfonso and Gigette; Ardovin and Lucia) all came from Italy before coming to America and becoming American citizens. My parents came from them and I came from my parents. I grew up as an American but also identified with my Italian heritage. My origin influenced my identity.
The same connection of origin influencing identity holds true for us spiritually. The bottom line to our origin spiritually is that it is in God’s foreknowledge (to know, perceive, or understand beforehand) of us before our natural birth. God knew us before we were formed in our mother’s womb, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations Jeremiah 1:5.” Nobody knows you better than God does. God had a claim on your life before any person, any career, any interest, or any pursuit. God knew you and I in His foreknowledge.
His foreknowledge of us includes Jesus defeat of satan through His shed Blood (1 Cor. 2:6-8; Hebrews 4:3; 1 Peter 1:20; Revelation 13:8) with the promise of eternal life for us and our place as members of the Body of Christ:
Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 3:6, 9, 11 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel…. 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ…. 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:
2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
You are a part of the Church which is His Body. Who are you in the Body of Christ? You will find this information primarily in the epistles or the letters written to the Church which is His Body. It is summed up in the description or our identity “In Christ.” It is our grace identity or who we are by the grace of God. You have worth; you have value; and you are somebody by the grace of God. Don’t diminish yourself. Find your place in the Body of Christ, His Church.
