The Honor From God

John 5:44 How can ye believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only?

All of us need acceptance and endorsement by those in authority over us or by our peers but we should let God make that happen and not seek it. People don’t always see all the good that we do but God is not unrighteous to forget our work and labor of love (Hebrews 6:10). One of the things that can hinder our faith and walk is from seeking the honor that comes from men. Wanting to be seen, known, and respected of men can be the pride of life (1 John 2:15-17). We should seek the honor that comes from God.  Sometimes we can waste our energy and time seeking the affirmation and approval of others.

The Apostle Paul gave an encouragement to his son in the faith Timothy that the good works we do cannot be hidden though at first they may not be obvious. 1 Timothy 5:24-25 says, Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. 25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise CANNOT BE HID.” Just like some men’s sins precede them and some men’s’ sins follow them so too some of our good works precede us and some follow us but they cannot be hidden.

We need not fret or need to maneuver to be noticed by men. Just be out to obey God and let God take care of who needs to notice it. Don’t struggle to try to be someone or be noticed: be out to help someone. Don’t struggle looking for someone to endorse you, to give you a break, or to open a door for you. That is also where favor comes in. Favor is God’s gracious kindness, blessing, and influence upon us and it is ours by virtue of being in Christ. We are seated with Him in heavenly places at God’s right hand or side of His favor. That favor can act like a shield that repels things (Psalm 5:12) or put something on us that is seen or noticed that brings us into favor with men like Joseph had in Potipher’s house (Genesis 39:1-6). The Lord Jesus Himself increased in favor for Luke 2:52 says, “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Believe in God’s favor on your life, be out to help someone, and leave the results to God.

Psalm 5:12 For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield.
