The Bible reveals the Church is a Body made up of many members who have gifts, a place, and a function. Salvation didn’t join us to an organization but set us in a Body called the Church (1 Corinthians 12:18; Ephesians 1:22, 23). Being a church member isn’t about signing a church roll it is being supernaturally birthed and placed in a Living Body.
Every Believer set in the Body of Christ has gifts and graces from God to function in some way. Everyone is DESIGNED TO FUNCTION IN SOME WAY, BUT NOT THE SAME WAY. Every Believer is called of God to service. We are sons of God who serve willfully, not in slavish duty, but out of love (Galatians 5:13). We don’t serve and work to get God’s grace, we serve and work because we have God’s grace Ephesians 2:10. This call to serve will often lead us to the areas where we are gifted or equipped by God to function.
These gifts, often generally termed “spiritual gifts,” are listed in various passages of Scripture.
- Fivefold MINISTRY gifts or offices—apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher 1 Corinthians 12:28 Ephesians 4:11.
- Sevenfold MOTIVATIONAL or Body gifts—prophecy, serving, teaching, exhortation, giver, ruler (administration), mercy Romans 12:3-8.
- Nine MANIFESTATION gifts of the Spirit—word of wisdom, word of knowledge, discerning of spirits, faith, gifts of healings, working of miracles, prophecy, divers kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues 1 Corinthians 12:7‑11.
All gifts are to be exercised so that the Body of Christ profits, benefits, and is edified. The key to the Body increasing in quality and quantity is for every member to function in the way God has designed to use them. The Body is built and built up by the supply and functioning of every part (Ephesians 4:16). As every member is mobilized and every joint supplies their part in God’s plan, a local church, and the Church increases in quality and in quantity.
Since all members have gifts and all members have a place, all members have a function; EVERY MEMBER IS TO BE A FUNCTIONAL MEMBER and there are no unused members. That means there is something for everyone to do, and no Christian needs to feel left out. Just like in the physical human body, where every function of the body has a member of its body to perform it, the same applies to the spiritual Body of Christ. Every member of the Body has a function of its Body to perform. You are needed, wanted, and gifted to do your part in the Body.
