Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
In our lifetime of walking with the Lord as His children here on earth, there are many things that we encounter that that cause pain, harm, injury, loss, and suffering. These things would cause us to ask or wonder why God allowed this to happen or why doesn’t God take care of this situation or how could this have happened. To answer these questions, we have to go back to the very beginning of the world’s creation and see God’s design, and it has to do with the word “dominion” which is often defined as authority which is the right to exercise power; ruling power; or the right to act. We need to understand our authority and dominion
When we don’t understand authority and dominion we become vulnerable to believing philosophies and even doctrines people develop to try to answer their “Why” and “How” questions like:
- GOD IS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO US ON EARTH.
(Extreme sovereignty doctrines that say God wills everything, good and bad, that happen to us; Nothing can happen to us without His approval; He is sovereign over all events and is the Supreme Dispenser of all events. The truth is that everything that happens is not His will); or
- THE DEVIL IS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO US ON EARTH
(The devil has a sphere of rule and influence as the god of this world system (2 Corinthians 4:4) we are exposed to but he is not all powerful or behind every bad thing that happens).
We must realize MAN’S AUTHORITY AND DOMINION WAS LOST WHEN ADAM FELL. It was delivered unto the devil, and with that authority, we see the reign of spiritual death, destruction, and the rule of the authority of darkness. Jesus became a partaker of flesh and blood that he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil and deliver mankind Hebrews 2:14, 15. The devil knowing this was part of Jesus’ mission even tempted Jesus with the power over all the kingdoms of the world which Adam gave to him in Luke 4:5-7, “And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. He got it because Adam delivered it or handed it over to him. With Adam’s right to act, and right to initiate and introduce things due to having dominion the devil uses it to introduce evil, things that harm, and things that can injure. The whole created Earth was even made subject to the bondage of corruption. Things now exist in the Earth and its environment that God never created or intended. A FALLEN MAN, A FALLEN ANGEL, AND A FALLEN EARTH now exist in a realm God originally created to be good and very good.
Jesus restored man’s dominion, authority, and right to rule in life in His death, burial, resurrection, and seating (Hebrews 2:14, 15; Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:20-23). When you understand man’s authority and dominion it allows a third explanation and answer to those questions and that is:
3. MAN’S PERSONAL DECISIONS INFLUENCE WHAT HAPPENS TO US ON EARTH:
A. In CREATING things that happen by cause and effect (sowing and reaping) or
B. In RESPONDING to what we are exposed to and what happens to us as a result of living in a fallen world (a cursed earth; Romans 8:21 calls the bondage of corruption), subject to a fallen angel (satanic or demonic attacks), and the decisions of fallen human beings (those ruled by spiritual death and demonic forces) or
C. In NOT RESPONDING; being passive; failing or neglecting to act when it is our responsibility
Everything that happens cannot always be explained by a simple answer but blaming God and using sovereignty to explain everything is not the answer. Yes, God is Sovereign, above all in power, authority, and rank but His Sovereignty will never violate:
- Man’s free will and choice Deuteronomy 30:19.
- His Word Psalm 138:2; Psalm 119:89.
- His character and integrity Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 6:18.
- His covenant promises and oath Psalm 89:34; 111:5, 9; Hebrews 6:17.
