Colossians 1:13 Who HATH delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.
When we read the book of Genesis 1:26, 28 we quickly discover that we were originally created to have dominion, rule, and authority over the earth, “26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” Authority is permission to act; liberty & freedom to act; right & privilege to act; jurisdiction to rule/govern. Adam did not give himself this authority any more than the fact he didn’t create himself. It was God’s idea and everything God created and did began as something good and very good.
King David who wrote Psalm 8:4-6 further substantiates that this dominion was over all the works of God’s hands. The writer of Hebrews in referring back to what David wrote in Psalm 8 and adds that God put all things in subjection under his feet and there was not anything that was not put under him. Hebrews 2:6-8 says, “But one (David) in a certain place (Psalm 8) testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? 7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: 8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
We were not created to be a slave to anyone or anything in the Earth but we were to rule and subdue everything. Hebrews 2:8 says that “But NOW we see not yet all things put under him.” NOW after the Fall of man into sin we no longer see man with all things in subjection to him. Adam had authority to rule and reign in the Earth but after he sinned and fell, that authority was delivered unto satan. That is why he is described as the god of this world and the prince (someone who rules) of darkness. We see man under the authority of darkness and the reign of spiritual death (Rm. 5:12). We see we are exposed to evil and evil forces that we have to deal with.
Hebrews 2:9 goes on to declare that even though NOW we don’t see all things yet in subjection to man what do we see? “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” We see Jesus becoming a partaker of flesh and blood in order to destroy him that had the power of death and deliver us.
Hebrews 2:14 says, “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” The merciless rule, oppression, and reign of satan with dominion over man would have gone on forever but Jesus came as the captain of our salvation to redeem us from sin, spiritual death, and satan. We have been delivered from the authority of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear son (Colossians 1:13). That is a fact of our redemption in Christ and it is a past tense fact for it says, “Who HATH DELIVERED US ….”The power or authority of darkness, satan’s kingdom, no longer has the right to rule over the child of God. There is also coming a time in the future when this world’s exposure to all evil rule, authority, and power is put down when even the last enemy called death will be brought into subjection (1 Corinthians 15:24-28).
