Proverb 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. 11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
Man’s wisdom and the wisdom of this world is praised, celebrated, sought after and rewarded. They are made celebrities, famous, and sought after for their secrets of success. People want to go to their lectures, seminars, buy their materials, and pattern their life after their advice; yet, in all of their worldly wisdom many have no knowledge of God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning (starting or beginning point) of real wisdom (Proverb 9:10).
The fear of the Lord is the soul of godliness and respect toward God. It is a designation of true piety toward God as opposed to carelessness, irreverence, flippancy, and disrespect. It is not a tormenting, terrorizing, frightful, or cringing fear from one that is doomed but reverence and awe of Who God is. People without the fear of the Lord are inconsiderate about God and what might be pleasing to Him whereas a person with the fear of the Lord shrinks back from doing anything to displease the One they love so much. It is not simple respect which is more between equals but a reverence and acknowledgement of God’s Almightiness, Omniscience, and Omnipresence.
The wisdom of God will promote you, protect you, lead you, increase you, bring you favor, and give you insight into solutions to the problems you may face. As Believers we are to make wisdom the principal thing (Proverb 4:8, 9). The fear of the Lord is the beginning point or starting point to the flow of that wisdom. The Believer who fears the Lord:
1. Withholds no obedience Genesis 22:12.
2. Is in awe of God/there is none like Him Psalm 33:6-9.
3. Walks in constant carefulness/quick responsiveness to the Lord Isaiah 11:1-3.
4. Hates evil and departs from it Proverb 8:13.
5. Has the right perspective about sin, judgment, and accountability Ecclesiastes 8:11-13.
