Memorial Day is a special day in which Americans pause to honor those who gave their lives in the defense of this country. Truly each one of them is a hero. Jesus said in John 15:13 greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. We owe our freedom to them and a great debt of gratitude. Remember the old saying, “If you can read, thank a teacher; if you can read English, thank a soldier.” If not for a soldier’s sacrifice we could have been ruled by evil dictators and speaking another language.
As we celebrate, we should not detach Memorial Day from the soldier. Throughout our history, no matter how righteous the cause, misguided liberal voices of protest arise when you mention honoring soldiers or whenever we as a nation have entered armed conflict. There are two extremes where some are for militarism to solve everything by force and some are for pacifism or opposition to all conflict and war. I want to encourage members of our armed forces and their families that God and the Bible fully supports them in their fighting oppressive regimes, terrorists, and nation state sponsors of terror. The need for weapons, defense, and war itself exists because of the fallen nature in man since the Garden of Eden. Contrary to the politically correct who live in a fantasy world and believe in utopia:
Man will not get better on his own.
Man is a sinner and, apart from God, in his fallen state IS NOT good.
Man left to himself would destroy the human race.
Protection to defend what’s important and valuable will be an element of life on Earth until Jesus comes. God’s first and best plan without sin, satan, and war was rebelled against creating the need for defense and weapons as a reality on Earth. We see from the fall of man onward God Himself posting an armed guard in the Garden, “So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life,” Genesis 3:24. In addition to God’s protection, today it is the soldier who is defending and protecting.
May God Bless all who grieve today for the loss of someone who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Thank you for your service, protection, and our freedom.
