1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
Faithfulness is the first thing God requires, seeks out, or looks to find in those He entrusts with the Gospel, responsibility, and any level of authority. Faithfulness is not optional in our relationship to God any more than it is in human relationships where one act of infidelity can ruin years of earned trustworthiness.
Fidelity is an essential requirement in all trustworthy human relationships. If a husband says to his wife, “but I’ve been faithful 75% of the time,” would any wife be satisfied with that? Parents who have young children who depend on a school bus to take them to school aren’t very tolerant or understanding if the bus only shows up three out of the five days of the week. They expect more from the school system. If our refrigerator quit a day now and then, we wouldn’t excuse it and say, “Oh it works most of the time?” We hold to a higher expectation.
The Word of God calls faithfulness a requirement. I love the USMC motto “Semper Fi (Fidelis),” always faithful and that’s what God expects of us. It is not an unreasonable requirement or expectation. Yes, we have liberty in Jesus. Yes, there are reasons to miss an assignment, church, adjust schedules, take time off, go on vacations, and times it would be wisdom to stay home. It is amazing, though, how intolerant people become and how unreasonable they think it is for God to have any expectation of them yet they hold to a high standard of expectation of God and of others toward them. I do believe some people have a double standard.
I do not think a man’s standard of what is faithful can be imposed but I think the target, goal, example we should shoot for is God’s faithfulness. Let God be the standard of what we define as faithful. Here are some verses on the faithfulness of God as an example to follow:
Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the FAITHFUL God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? OR HATH HE SPOKEN AND SHALL HE NOT MAKE IT GOOD?
1 Kings 8:56 Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: THERE HATH NOT FAILED ONE WORD OF ALL HIS GOOD PROMISE, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.
Psalm 89:33 Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my FAITHFULNESS to fail.34 MY COVENANT WILL I NOT BREAK, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
Psalm 119:89 For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.90 Thy FAITHFULNESS is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.
Isaiah 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: 11 Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I HAVE SPOKEN IT, I WILL ALSO BRING IT TO PASS; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: IT SHALL NOT RETURN UNTO ME VOID, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Hebrews 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and FAITHFUL high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability (unchangeableness) of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is FAITHFUL that promised).
