testimony of our conscience

2 Corinthians 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

The Christian life ought to be one of joy, in fact, fullness of joy (John 15:11). That is not to imply a trouble free, problem free, or trial free life but rather joy in the midst of it all. Fullness of joy is ours because of Jesus’ victory (John 16:33) in the world. It is in the world where He defeated sin, sickness, satan, and the curse. His overcoming victory is the basis of our joy and so our joy is based on an unchangeable already accomplished fact.

One of the main hindrances to joy is sin and the resulting guilt from sin. Sin always sets up an inner conflict in a believer. We cannot have fullness of joy with a guilty conscience for when we are guilty of sin we feel conviction, accused, shame, and lose our sense of being righteous. This is not all bad for it lets us know something is wrong and we’ve broken a moral law of God. We cannot run from a guilty conscience for God’s moral law is written on our heart and will be in us wherever we go. It is like a moral compass placed within us by God’s design.

Thank God for the grace of forgiveness that was purchased by Jesus’ sacrifice for us. If we confess our sins (acknowledge them and say the same thing God’s Word says about them) He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). There is nothing like the joy of a clear conscience before God. A clear conscience is one that is void of offense toward God and man (Acts 23:1).

Acts 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
