Hebrews 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
Everything God built in the Old Testament was according to a pattern and the pattern was always from God not man. When God told Noah to build the ark Noah’s ark had a pattern Genesis 6:14-16. Noah followed God’s pattern and preached righteousness but did not change the Ark for those hearing his preaching over the 100 years Hebrews 11:7. When God told Moses to build the Tabernacle, He said to do it according to the pattern (example, model, impression, figure, fashion, print) Hebrews 8:5; Exodus 25:1, 9. David’s tabernacle was by a pattern 1 Chronicles 28:11, 12 as well as Solomon’s Temple. The pattern matters because it precedes the glory (God’s manifested presence) like in Solomon’s Temple in 2 Chronicles 5:1-7:3. The pattern precedes the glory and the glory (God’s stamp of approval) seals the pattern.
There is a movement that has gained popularity in America in the last 40 years called seeker friendly, (seeker sensitive, seeker driven, or seeker targeted) church growth. It seems that in an effort to reach lost people they have resorted to a strategy to affect growth that uses the philosophies of men (Colossians 2:8). It is the idea that you can make the “unchurched” (their term not God’s) comfortable in church by removing the things from church that make the “unchurched” uncomfortable. The seeker church is aptly defined as “a church for the unchurched” where they say the beginning point of the church is the seeker. The problem is you cannot and will not find this method of “doing church” (their term not God’s) in Scripture anywhere. It is based on an unbiblical model, wrong theology, and philosophy of men for a “new way of doing church.” It is a business marketing approach applied to the church and building the church by a people pattern and what people want.
Jesus said He would build His Church Matthew 16:18; and whatever God builds, it is according to a blueprint, picture, and pattern. Do we think the New Testament Church which is a fulfillment of all of the types and shadows of the Old Testament would not have a pattern as well? The pattern for the Church should come from God not man. The beginning point of the Church was God in His eternal purpose before the foundation of the world Ephesians 1:9, 10; 3:1-11. He knows how to “do” church. Remember the Church was His idea not man’s.
