blessed with all we need

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

God blessed us as Christians in Christ Jesus with every spiritual blessing necessary to live up to all that is right and holy. The best we can be is to be Christ-like in attitudes and actions and we are blessed by God already to be that. The verb tense of Ephesians 1:3 is past tense, “… who hath blessed us….” He always gives ability before He gives us responsibility. It would be impossible to be a Christian without these spiritual blessings or provisions but He has freely given them to us. He chose us in Christ that we should be and live holy and without blame before Him and His grace is sufficient to produce this Christ-likeness and holy life. This does not mean we have no responsibilities in order to live out this holy life. There are some things we must know and do.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
1 Corinthians  9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (BEING NOT WITHOUT LAW TO GOD, BUT UNDER THE LAW TO CHRIST), that I might gain them that are without law.

The victory of Christ’s Cross wasn’t about changing God but about changing us. We are dead to the Law under grace but yet not against the law, anti law, or lawless. There are moral standards of acceptable behavior even under grace all of which reflect Christ-likeness. Under grace, we don’t view God’s high, holy, moral standards and say:

  1. There is no standard (lawlessness).
    b. Adjust the standard (compromise).
    c. Give up under the standard (works attitude).
    d. Pretend to meet the standard (hypocrisy).

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death. It is through the Spirit that all fleshly behavior can be stopped (Romans 8:13). We are empowered by it and we can walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. This is God’s provision, power, force, and ability to live holy and it is in us in Christ Jesus. The cross and resurrection of Jesus made this available to us. Sin can be complicated but its solution is simple. We must give up all self-help efforts, come to the end of ourselves and then turn to God’s provision. God’s provision was a Person for Jesus is made unto us holiness (sanctification1 Corinthians 1:30) and He made us saints (holy ones 1 Corinthians 1:2).
