Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
The Bible declares that because the Believer has been justified by faith in Jesus’ work on the Cross for them that they have peace with God. Peace with God is a position we have before God that we are no longer His enemies but are in His favor. Having peace with God gives us access to walk in the peace of God which will act our heart, mind, and emotions from the confusion and turmoil in the world around us. The Apostle Paul told the Colossians to let the peace of God rule in their hearts which implies that if we will let it. His peace can rule in our hearts instead of all our fears, anxieties, and doubts.
Letting peace rule in our hearts individually has an impact on how we live with others especially in our homes and family. It is much easier to resist the temptation to disturb the peace of others in our home when we let the peace of God guard our own mind and heart. It isn’t always easy but it is doable.
Marriage and family seem to have a unique potential for irritations that can disturb the peace in our home. Keep in mind God loves people even in imperfect families and there is grace (help, strength, enabling power) for life including family life (1 Peter 3:7). Why is there such potential for conflict within families?
1. There are no perfect family members & guess what – You are one of them.
2. We still have a fleshly nature with its desires that we are all still susceptible to yield to.
3. There is a devil loose in the Earth, who is not in Hell yet, who seeks to stop God’s plan through the family.
4. Our differences (male vs. female, young vs. old, personal habits, preferences, personalities, physical and spiritual gifting.
Add to each of these that there are times when each of us is more susceptible to irritations (tired, hungry, when upset, angry, times of the day where we aren’t at our best). Proverb 24:3, 4 says, “Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: 4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” It would do us well to understand some of these basic things.
