John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Followers of Jesus (disciples) continue in God’s Word. The truth they learn from continuing in the Word brings freedom into their lives. It is freedom from sin, sickness, satan, and the curse. The word continue is the Greek word “meno” that is translated as “abide” in Jesus’ teaching on the Vine and the Branches in John 15:4, 6, 7, 10 and it means to continue, remain, abide, and to stay (in a given place, state, relation, or expectancy). Sounds like constantly being in the Word and obeying it.
Disciples continue in the Word because it becomes the final authority to all decisions, opinions, thoughts, views, and judgments. Everyone has a final authority, or something they look at to settle with finality all questions and issues but it isn’t always the Word of God. To some it is their own opinions, thoughts, views, and judgments and there are others who look to other people. Disciples look to the Word.
Disciples also realize that part of obeying God and continuing in His Word means continuing in the Church or assembling with the Body of Christ. The Local Church is what supports and undergirds the truth of God in our life. In 1 Timothy 3:15, the local church is called the pillar (support) and ground (a stay, bulwark, firm support) of the truth. 1 Timothy 3:15 says, “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” It is calling the Local Church the “house of God” and “the church of the living God.” Why do you get so picky about little things like being in the Word/church attendance?
- Degenerative processes are by degrees (Things tend to degenerate by degrees or little by little).
- Destructive processes are quicker than building processes (Destroying a godly life can happen more quickly than building a godly life).
- The Death process is quicker than the growth process (Death is instant but growth is continuous).
Here is what I’ve observed after over 30 years of Pastoring:
If the devil can get you out of the Word, he can get you out of church.
If the devil can get you out of church, he can get you out of the Word.
