WHAT BIBLE HOPE DOES FOR US

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. Hope is absolutely essential to a successful Christian life. Hope is listed in in 1 Corinthians 13:13 as one of the three unfailing, unceasing, and abiding forces within a Christian. God is the Source of hope which is contained in the Scriptures and the power of the Holy Spirit Rom. 15:4, 13. We are exhorted to not be moved away from the hope that is in the Gospel in Colossians 1:23 “If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister.” People who do not draw upon the hope of the Gospel turn away from God’s Word and end up looking for hope in all the wrong places.

Let’s observe some things hope does for us or what hope accomplishes for us:

  1. IT MOTIVATES US TO PURIFY OURSELVES.

1 John 3:3, And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.

This is speaking of the Blessed hope (Titus 2:11, 12) of Jesus’ Return for us.

  1. IT ENCOURAGES US THAT THE POTENTIAL TO CHANGE IS IN US IN CHRIST.

Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

  1. IT GIVES US AN ANCHOR IN LIFE’S STORMS.

Hebrews 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

  1. IT GIVES US A PICTURE OF A BETTER TOMORROW.

Romans 8: 24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not (with physical sight), then do we with patience wait for it (hope gives us an inner picture or something we see with the eyes of our inner man). Hope is God’s picture making power in us.

  1. IT GIVES US DESIRE AND MOTIVATION.

Proverb 13:12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

People who lose hope (which is discouragement) lose their drive, desire, and courage. As a result they become weak, worn out, and sick inside. When hope is restored they become alive again; motivation and strength return.

  1. IT IS A HIDING PLACE AND SHIELD IN THE DAY OF ATTACK OR TROUBLE.

Psalm 119:114 Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.

  1. IT DISPLACES DEPRESSION AND DISCOURAGEMENT.

Psalm 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Discouragement is loss of hope. It means to deprive of courage or confidence. When discouraged, you lose your fight, lose your fight, you have lost confidence or your faith. It is often reflected in a sad countenance. Our face ought to be a billboard that says, God is good, victory is mine, and His grace is sufficient for all that is before me.

  1. IT PROTECTS OUR SOUL.

1 Thessalonians 5:8, But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

A helmet is worn on our head so hope is like a helmet that protects our head, our mind, our will, our emotions, and our thinking.
