Jude 20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
We are exhorted in these verses (Jude 20, 21) to build ourselves up on our most holy faith by praying in the Holy Ghost and to keep ourselves in the love of God. Praying in the Holy Ghost most definitely helps to keep us in a walk in the spirit above a walk in the flesh and it helps us to walk in the love of God. Thank God for the empowerment that comes from praying in the Holy Ghost.
Keeping ourselves in the love of God involves obedience to His Word which is how Jesus defined love in John 14:21-24 “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me…, “…If a man love me, he will keep my words….” So often love is portrayed as an emotion or a feeling instead of obedience. This always happens if love is not linked with truth. The Holy Spirit through John the Apostle said, “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth 1 John 3:18.”
Keeping ourselves in the love of God includes our love for God and others but also keeping ourselves in God’s love for us. To keep means “to attend to carefully, take care of, and to guard” ourselves or to take watchful care to stay in the sphere of God’s love. The exhortation implies that it is something we are to do and that there will be something to try to separate us from the love of God. One of the ways we keep ourselves in the love of God is to hide the Word in our heart about the truth of God’s love to withstand our thoughts, feelings, warfare, and lies that come to separate us. We must renew our minds to God’s love for us.
The Love of God is:
1. NOT AFFECTED BY TIME (no expiration date or label).
Psalm 103:17 But the mercy (loving-kindness) of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.
2. WAS NOT STOPPED BY THE WORSE THINGS IN US (there was nothing good in us that compelled His love to us).
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
3. DOES NOT CHANGE WITH CIRCUMSTANCES.
Romans 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
4. WIPES OUT OUR PAST AND GIVES US A FUTURE.
Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
5. WILL NOT GIVE UP ON US (there’s no “quit” on His end).
Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
6. GIVES US A CONTINUING HELPING RELATIONSHIP (there’s never a time we are without help).
Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
7. GIVES US THE GREATEST MOTIVATION & FREEDOM TO LOVE OTHERS.
1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 19 We love him, because he first loved us.
