Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
As Christians we are built by God to be able to endure and overcome what we face in this fallen world. Jesus gave us victory not just over sin, sickness, and satan but also the world (John 16:33). There are things that happen that are not because of what we have done but because we live in a fallen world with fallen beings and a fallen angel. We can continue to live on in spite of difficulties, keep on keeping on, out live, and exist beyond the problems of life. We can survive it all but God did not put us here just to survive but to thrive, to prosper, succeed, increase, be fruitful, and multiply. To thrive we have to start a cycle of multiplication and increase. To do that we must use two of the greatest gifts God has given us: dominion and seed.
The Book of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings, tells us that when God put man in the Garden and gave him two gifts to work with (Genesis 1:11,12,28,29, 2:15):
1. DOMINION – Right to bear rule; it implies initiative or the authority to initiate; the right to introduce a thing; the action of taking the first step; ability to think or act without being urged.
2. SEED – Seed is the source origin or beginning of anything.
God emphasized that seeds bear fruit according to their kinds. The fruit has seed in it and the seed has fruit in it. God’s plan was for man to work with the seed, ground, and be fruitful and multiply. It was not a miracle but a process. It was a seed for your need system. God was saying, “This is My system. I put you in charge; the Earth is your area of jurisdiction. Use your dominion and seed to replenish the Earth and to be fruitful and multiply.” God put increase under a law, a process (sowing and reaping).
The point I’d like you to recognize is that “Nothing just happened.” All of the increase was by him using his dominion and seed. In order for him to thrive and not just survive he had to work the process, he had to sow to reap. The fruit we want to see is in whatever we have as a seed. Increase comes by:
Dominion – take your responsibility for beginning and
Seed – the beginning of anything.
We waste a lot of time calculating our losses instead of taking inventory of what we have been given as a seed. As a great preacher I heard from my travels to Africa said, “We look at what is NOT instead of what we GOT.” We need not envy the harvest others have but need to recognize our seed. We need to take inventory of what we have as a seed. You are a walking warehouse of seed. (Many things can be a seed or something we sow: God’s Word; behaviors; money; time; words; actions; work; thoughts…).
Some people passively wait for getting a break, or being lucky. Luck is often defined as a chance happening, or that which happens beyond a person’s control. It is also defined as success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions. Increase is not governed by getting a break or luck but a law called sowing and reaping. A law is a principle, force, or influence impelling to action; it is that which is assigned or prescribed by the ordinance and statute of God. Similarly, why does a sinner become a saint every time they believe in their heart God raised Jesus from the dead and confess with their mouth the Lord Jesus? Is it luck or God giving them a break? It is because it is a law that works every time which is called the law of faith Romans 3:27.
