Doctrine is not and should not be a dirty word amongst Christians. Doctrine is the absolute truths, principles, and body of teachings from Scripture. Sound doctrine as a part of preaching and teaching has been in a free fall and decline for the past 30 years or so. It has been replaced by feel good messages, psychology, motivational speaking, and entertainment all to collect people or the crowd. No reproof, no ouchy words, nothing that confronts or corrects. The Bible’s overall message is positive, full of life, joy and hope but that isn’t all of its truth. It encourages but it also corrects. It refreshes but also reproves. It comforts but it also confronts.
Our enemy and the spirit of error and antichrist already at work in our world has to neutralize the powerful, sanctifying, and evil restraing force of the Church in the Earth. His main avenue has been through false teaching, and attacking the truths of the Word of God. It is the first thing he attacked in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. He didn’t attack them but what God said and interestingly the first doctrine he attacked was the doctrine of judgment.
False teachers and teachings have infiltrated the Church, religion or a form of godliness has replaced the Scriptures, and the spirit of the world has joined the Church. All of these have corrupted and adulterated the Word of God. The Bible prophesies of Last Days people not being able to endure SOUND DOCTRINE (2 Timothy 4:3) and the lack of sound doctrine shows up in the lack of sound living and bad character surfacing in these perilous times (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Dr. Kenneth E. Hagin, one of the greatest men of faith this world has ever known, speaking to a group of prominent ministers said, “The time will come when you will have to reteach all the cardinal doctrines you presently know because doctrine will be annihilated by the hirelings.” I think we’ve reached that time. We should know some of what the Word of God says about doctrine:
1. Jesus was known for His doctrine not just His miracles.
Mark 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
2. Jesus’ warnings were about doctrine.
Matt 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
3. Doctrine is the first thing the Word is profitable for.
2 Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
4. Spiritual life began when we were exposed to doctrine.
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
5. Growth and Christlikeness happen through the right doctrine.
Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.
6. Never too young for doctrine.
Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
7. Division enters with wrong doctrine Romans 16:17
Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
8. Predicted rise of false doctrine in the latter times.
1 Timothy 4:1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
9. Sound doctrine keeps you and increases your influence.
1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
10. Sound doctrine is the foundation for Godly conduct.
1 Timothy 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
