2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The Apostle Paul tells his son in the faith Timothy of a time that would come when people would not endure, sit under, or bear up under sound doctrine. He had just told Timothy in chapter 3 that “In the Last Days perilous times would come for men shall be… ,” and then lists their bad behaviors or character traits 2 Timothy 3:1-5. The time period he speaks of here in chapter four is the same Last Days.
Why would there be such an aversion to sound doctrine? Aside from preachers not holding fast to sound doctrine in their preaching, one reason is that since sound doctrine is the foundation and marching orders for all godly conduct (1 Timothy 6:3), sound doctrine must be hated by those who are unwilling to change their conduct. Doctrine is foundational to how we view ourselves and the world we live in (or our world view).
DOCTRINE is the source of our CONVICTIONS (Beliefs)
CONVICTIONS (Beliefs) are the foundation of our WORLDVIEW
WORLDVIEW influences our Behavior (How We Live)
We need to attend to sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16) for DOCTRINE is the first thing that is mentioned that the WORD of GOD is profitable for:
2 Timothy 3:16 All SCRIPTURE is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for DOCTRINE, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
