FAITH AND FAITHFULNESS: OUR BELIEFS SHOWING UP IN OUR BEHAVIOR

faithfulness and blessing

Galatians 3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
Genesis 18:18, 19 says, “Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”

God cares about our financial well being and said that not only would He bless us but make us a blessing (Gen.12:2, 3). He wants us to have enough for our families, for supporting the work of God, and to help the poor and suffering. In some circles of Christianity, prosperity is a controversial subject but the opposite of it, poverty, helps no one. The tragedy is that poverty is unnecessary because God is the Giver of every good gift and He has promised by covenant to be our provider. Jesus also bore our sins, sicknesses, and the curse (of which poverty is a part of) on the Cross.

Second Corinthians 9:8 in the context of our sowing says, “And God is able to make all grace ABOUND toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.” He is able to cause a super abundance in quantity and quality with enough to spare to abound to us. An often overlooked principle that connects us to this abounding condition is our faithfulness as revealed in Proverb 28:20, “A faithful man shall ABOUND with blessing….”

We often claim that Abraham’s blessing is ours by faith but we have to also look at Abraham’s faithfulness. Abraham was blessed because he had faith but also because he was faithful/reliable. In Galatians 3:9 it says, “So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.” The word faithful can also mean “believing” but you really can’t separate our believing or our beliefs from our faithfulness. James 2:18 says, “Show me thy faith without thy works and I will show you my faith by my works.” Faithfulness is simply our beliefs showing up in our behavior such as:

I tithe faithfully because I believe in tithing.
I give faithfully because I believe in giving.
I attend church faithfully because I believe in the Church and fellowship.
I pray faithfully because I believe in a God who answers prayer.
I preach the Gospel and make disciples because I believe in the Great Commission.

Faithfulness is the reason God chose Abraham in the first place before He blessed him for He He knew He could be relied upon. “ Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; 8 And foundest his heart FAITHFUL before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land…Nehemiah 9:7, 8.” Genesis 18:18, 19 says, “Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” Remember Abraham’s faithfulness as well as his faith.
