Purpose is the intention, design, and aim of God for our life on earth. It is what we are to be and do. It is why we are here and the reason behind our existence. It is what we are born and built for. Our life is not an experiment or an accident. Our life and purpose was preplanned by God before the Creation of the world. God has a general purpose and a specific purpose for all Believers Ecclesiastes 3:1.
The reason why many never fulfill their specific purpose (often called destiny) is because they try to skip over fulfilling His general purposes. God has six main and general purposes for our lives. Obedience to these come first and it is an aspect of walking in the light of the Word that we already know as His purpose for our life Psalm 119:105, 130; 1 John 1:7. We are designed for:
John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 .They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
1 Peter 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Matt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
1 Corinthians 4:1-2 Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
Luke 16:1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. 2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.
Sometimes we search for purpose through someone giving us a prophecy, a word of knowledge, or through God giving us a vision or dream rather than first obeying the purposes in His Word. What is in God’s heart for us is in His Word and as we obey it more specific things come to us.
