Salvation restores our relationship and fellowship with God (1 Cor. 1:9) We are to grow in the intimacy and closeness of that fellowship. There are some valuable keys to developing that intimacy:
1. KNOW AND BELIEVE THE LOVE GOD HAS FOR YOU
1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
We never draw close to those we mistrust or to those we are uncertain of their thoughts toward us.
Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
God hates sin but He has also declared He would be merciful to us (Hebrews 10:16-22). We don’t have to run from God when we sin but run to Him for cleansing (1 John 1:9; 2 Cor. 7:1).
3. HONEST COMMUNICATION
Psalm 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Honesty is not just truthfulness but also openness, transparency, and a willingness to show vulnerability. When you think of intimacy say it like this IN TO ME SEE.
Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
Intimacy is a process that takes place over time. Time together is essential. Lovers love spending time together but it does take a plan or planned and appointed times. Amos said, “Can two walk together except they be agreed.” Agreed is a word that means an appointment or a fixed agreement; to meet together at a stated time or set time.
5. A PURSUIT WE INITIATE
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
The initiative for fellowship is on our end, “Draw nigh unto God and He will draw nigh to you….” Initiative is the act of taking the first step or the responsibility for beginning.
