FRUIT OR FRUITS?

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

In Galatians 5:16-26 we see the fruit of the Spirit in contrast to the works of the flesh. The Bible says if any man is in Christ He is a new creation and that means we have a new nature. If we learn to walk by that new nature we can visibly, noticeably, and recognizably express the fruit of that new nature (new creation, new man, inner man, spirit man).

Notice it is called the “FRUIT” of the spirit and not “FRUITS.” Why singular and not plural?”

1. We call it fruit because when our new nature is expressed or someone is under the control of their spirit, it can be seen like fruit. Fruit is visible, tangible, and recognizable. All the fruit comes from the life in the seed.

2. We call it fruit – singular – in contrast to works plural because all these graces compliment and coordinate with one another and when a person is under the control of the spirit nature – they are all possible.

3. We call it fruit because they point to one man, Jesus – whom all these are seen in one whole perfection. The Father’s plan is to reproduce one new man in us, Jesus – who is Christ in us, the hope of Glory.

4. We call it fruit because of it being one fruit – LOVE that has different characteristics:
a. JOY is love’s cheerfulness.
b. PEACE is love’s quietness.
c. LONGSUFFERING is love’s forbearance.
d. GENTLENESS is love’s kindness.
e. GOODNESS is love’s generosity.
f. FAITHFULNESS is love’s dependability.
g. MEEKNESS is love’s mildness.
h. TEMPERANCE is love’s self-control.
