Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
The Bible nowhere says to exalt relevance as a concept to trump all others and for relevance to be the supreme goal of ministry. The Word of God is powerful and penetrating enough on its own to reach any human heart of any culture at any point of time in history. The Hebrews being addressed in the Book of Hebrews were being warned about missing the spiritual rest God planned for them by the example of the children of God in the wilderness. They didn’t profit from what they heard because they didn’t mix faith with it and instead hardened their hearts in unbelief. The audience being communicated to by the letter to the Hebrews were being warned about the same evil heart of unbelief that would lead them to depart from the Living God. They were to, instead, give all diligence or labor to enter into the spiritual rest God provided.
The Word of God is able like a two-edged sword to pierce, penetrate, and divide all that might be in our heart and lay it bare to us. It exposes and lays bare all that is in our heart to us like all is laid bare and exposed to God Himself so we can rid ourselves of unbelief and come to faith in God’s finished work. There is no being not fully known, laid bare, and open before God with whom we will give account to. The idea presented here is to remind the Hebrews that nothing in their heart can be concealed from God so deal with the issues of their heart.
What God has said in His Word can penetrate, expose, and cut out any hypocrisy or unbelief in our heart and soul. God’s truth, not relevance, has the power to pierce like a sword and penetrate any human being at any time whether it is read, preached, communicated in conversation, or revealed directly by the Holy Spirit. We should quit dumbing down the power of God’s Word to do what only it can do which is reach human hearts. How much more relevant can you get than, “… piercing to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
