In Genesis 2:2, 3 God rested on the seventh day (Sabbath) because He was finished with His Creation work. This is the first reference of the concept of a Sabbath rest from a FINISHED WORK. In Exodus 16:22-26 when God gave Moses the Law, the Israelites were invited to enter into God’s creation rest by not working on the seventh day or Sabbath trusting God’s ADVANCE PROVISION of the bread of two days on the sixth day. This was not the only rest God offered them because He also offered them rest from their enemies (A DEFEATED ENEMY) in Canaan’s Land, the Promised Land Joshua 21:43-45. Four hundred years later David in the Psalms spoke of yet another day and rest that God’s people could enter which would be the rest provided in redemption. “This is the DAY which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it Psalm 118:24.”This would be the day the Lord would make to pay the price for it all and once and for all by the sacrifice of His Son. This Christian rest in salvation provided by grace is a rest in a FINISHED WORK, ADVANCE PROVISION, and A DEFEATED ENEMY. This rest comes by faith in His grace.
In Hebrews chapters 3 and 4 the writer declares five different times that the time to hear God’s voice is “Today” (Hebrews 3:7, 13, 15; 4:7 twice). Why warn us of the dangers of unbelief and missing God’s rest if it not a possibility? We enter into the Sabbath rest (a spiritual rest), initially, when we cease from our own works and accept Jesus’ finished work and receive salvation. We also enter into that Sabbath rest of ceasing from our own works when we DAILY walk by faith in His promises (4:1, 2) or respond by faith to the finished work of Jesus (grace). Our redemption is a finished work of God recreating us as new creations in Christ. The new Creation was a complete success and needs none of our work added to it. We have to mix our faith with the facts of our redemption. Today if we will respond by faith to His grace we can walk in our Sabbath rest. The true Sabbath rest is available today!
