THE EARTH WAS MADE FOR MAN

THE EARTH WAS MADE FOR MAN

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Isaiah 45:12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

God created the natural world and all of creation is subject to God and separate from God’s person for Genesis 1:1 says, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The earth is not God and it is not eternal for it will one day pass away Revelation 21:1. Pantheists who worship nature and believe that God and the universe are identical deny the distinctiveness of God’s Person. It is the belief that God is all and all is God or God is in everything and everything is God. Trees are God, the ground is God, rivers are God, the planets are God, animals are God…. This provides a convenient but also false theology foundation for radical environmentalists of our day as well as many false religions. Pantheists believe that all religions must develop an ethic where the environment is central. For Christians the strongest arguments against pantheism are man’s dominion over the Earth, the coming new Heaven and Earth, and God’s many commands against making idols.

When God created man, the creation was also to be under his dominion or he was to have dominion over it (dominion means to tread down; subjugate; rule over; prevail against Gen.1:26) and subdue it (subdue means to conquer; subjugate; tread down; bring into subjection Gen. 1:28). Creation was made for man and not man for creation. Man was permitted to consume from the Earth (Gen. 1:29-30; 9:3). God created nature to serve and supply for man and for man to dress (work/cultivate) and keep it (guard/protect/attend to it) Gen. 2:15. That is responsible care and stewardship of the environment. Man was not made to serve the planet or “Mother Earth.

Human beings are viewed as superior to the rest of creation. Have you ever noticed in Genesis 1, 2 that the record of Creation occurs in ascending order, going from the inanimate to the animate – planet, fish, birds, animals, and then man under His Creator. God put it all under man’s dominion to use it and manage it for his good. In contrast, if you look at Romans 1:24, 25, fallen man reverses the order and begins to worship creation over the Creator. Those who worship Creation over Creator go in descending order making the highest thing for them as the inanimate (the Creation) and the lowest to them the animate (man). Even animals like whales, polar bears, birds … and plants … are at times used to inconvenience man at any level to “save the planet.”

Why is a proper view of these things important? Energy drives every economy and we need sustainable energy sources but also affordable energy. Decisions are being made every day that affect us with taxes and regulations that thwart economic progress, energy development, and affordable energy sources. Studies of natural gas, coal, and oil have said that we as the United States have more than the entire world, more than China, Canada, and Saudi Arabia combined, but over 80% of our lands are inaccessible for oil drilling due to regulation. We have constant regulations being legislated, not by Congress or the legislative representatives of the people, but by government agencies like the EPA and executive orders from our President. We have regulations where Congress was bypassed and therefore it is without representation.
