Rom 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
We are often tempted to think that the opposition to us moving forward in the plan of God is a person or people. The Bible declares, “… If God be for us, who can be against us?” The truth of the matter is that people cannot stop us. It is our preoccupation with the thought that they can which really stops us. God’s plan for us is not subject to people’s vote in favor or against it. God is greater than anyone’s opinion of us and He will perfect (bring to the end or complete) that which concerns us Psalm 138:2.
We have a great example of this assurance being given to Joshua in the Old Testament as he is taking over leadership of God’s people from Moses. God’s Word in Joshua 1:5 says, “There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Anything God’s Word has said about us we can boldly say about ourselves Hebrews 13:5, 6. That allows me to say, “I will not blame people for no man can stop me from my future unless I let them.”
When God speaks in our spirit and from His Word about the future plan He has for us we cannot look around for support around or outside of us before we believe it. We have to have a faith that functions independently of support. The thing that gives us the advantage in the world is God’s Word and that is what He watches over to perform (Jer.1:12), not people’s agreement, opinions, or support. God never takes a poll before He moves His plan forward for a person or before He promotes anyone. He does not wait for others to agree. We cannot wait for everyone’s vote in favor of the future God has planned for us. Waiting for others to believe it, agree with it, support it, and commit to it can put our future on hold. Romans 3:3, 4 says, “For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? 4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.” It is not what they believe that counts but rather what we believe and if God be for us who can be against us.
