Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: 29 For our God is a consuming fire.
John the Baptist is speaking of Jesus’s ministry as one that would come which would be mightier than his ministry with another baptism aside from water baptism like in his ministry. It would be the baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire. Fire can be used in Scripture as a metaphor for the presence of God (Ex. 3:2-6), glory of God (Ex. 24:17), and judgment of God (Is. 66:15). Here in Luke 3:16, 17 a special use of fire imagery is connected with John the Baptist’s prophecy that Jesus would baptize “with the Holy Ghost and with fire” a promise that was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. Tongues of fire rested upon those gathered in the upper room with the result that they were all filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:1-4). The fire here is a manifestation of God, in the Third Person of the Trinity, which was unknown to the Old Testament.
The outpouring of God’s Spirit on Pentecost brought the Holy Ghost and Fire to the church. God has also used awakenings, revivals, and moves of God in history to restore fire back into the people of God. We’re told in Heb. 12:25 29 that God is speaking once again and there is a shaking going on in the world and church. He is described as a consuming fire (Heb. 12:29). Remember that it was the burning bush that caught Moses’ attention and he turned aside to see it (Ex. 3:2). The Lord desires to ignite His people with His fire so that the world will turn aside and see Jesus. The world needs to see a Church on fire with the power of the Holy Ghost holding forth the power in the Gospel.fresh fire
